The journey of our jewellery

For us in AKVA, transparency is key. On this page we give you a unique insight into the production journey of the AKVA-pieces – from the very first step of creating a piece in our workshop, to when it is received by the customer.

Tap below to see the steps an AKVA-piece goes through to come alive.
1

A wax model of the jewellery is made in our workshop in Copenhagen.

2

The wax model is sent to our foundry in Germany.

3

The wax model is placed in a casting cuvette and cast in metal. A rubber mold is then made, from which wax impressions are made, which are cast in recycled silver or gold.

4

The raw casts of the jewellery are sent back to our workshop in Copenhagen.

5

The goldsmithing begins and the casts are sawn off, set to size, soldered together and go through the many grinding and polishing processes and finally the piece comes to life.

6

Some jewellery is set with diamonds and/or engraved or rhodium-plated.

7

The jewellery is boxed with associated care information and a cleaning cloth.

8

The jewellery can be picked up in our showroom or sent by post.

9

With proper care and a lot of love, the jewellery can live on for generations. AKVA can always be contacted for guidance on jewellery care and repair.

Recycled precious metals

Our jewellery is cast in recycled precious metals at Kalman Hafner in Germany. Hafner cast in the highest quality and use solely secondary material, also known as urban mining, i.e. waste from the industrial processing of precious metals, as well as old gold that was previously processed into, for example, jewellery, coins or dental gold.

CO2-neutral materials

Due to the use of urban mining, the extraction and processing of metals has not damaged the earth’s surface and thus harmed the environment. In addition, the gold used is CO2-neutral, as renewable energy is used in the process and support is provided for climate protection projects.

Fairtrade diamonds

Our diamonds are bought from Windiam, who, with their focus on transparency in relation to CSR and sustainability, meet the highest international standards in the diamond sector. Windiam have zero tolerance towards conflict diamonds and thus ensure ethical extraction of all diamonds all the way down to 0,004ct. AKVA’s diamonds are therefore both fair trade and conflict-free. This means that they are not financed by wars, atrocities or other inhumane treatment of people.

Windiam have an environmentally responsible business model, seeking to eliminate or minimize negative environmental impacts and by controlling their use of resources and energy. The goal is to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2025.

Local production

We have established a production as local as possible without compromising on quality and expression – we aim for a transparent process where we are in constant development, and ensure that everyone who comes into contact with our jewellery meet EU standards.

We take responsibility and make active choices in all aspects of our production – from every single step of the jewellery production to everything from packaging to postcards to the working conditions internally in AKVA. We cast in Germany, where we have a close and strong relationship with the foundry, while the quality being the very best. Our diamond retailer is located in Antwerp, the world’s leading center for diamond trade. In addition, all other production takes place in Denmark – from goldsmithing, stone setting and engraving to graphic work and packaging.

Our CSR

Our choice of business partners are based on trust and, to a large extent, that we can vouch for their CSR. Read more about our diamond distributor and foundry above. As previously mentioned, all our business partners are located within the EU, which ensures EU standards for employees in all stages of production. This increases the production costs and thus also our retail prices, compared to production outside the EU, and by purchasing an AKVA piece of jewellery, you are therefore supporting “local” production within the EU.

Packaging

We use FSC-certified paper for all printing and have our graphic work done in-house or at a Danish manufacturer. Our boxes are eco-certified, made in natural colored cardboard with tall oil foam as an insert. Biodegradable materials, quality and aesthetics are paramount in the universe built around AKVA.
